Mason County has a long and rich history of progressive agricultural production in the Texas Hill Country. Primary commodities include: Beef Cattle, Wildlife Recreation and Hay Production. Over the past several year an increase in grape vineyard for wine production has taken shape. The majority of the County consists of brushy covered rolling hills with granite and limestone outcroppings which encompasses 596,400 acres. There is approximately 30,000 acres of improved pasture used for haying and grazing with an additional 5,000 acres of tillable land suitable for row crop farming. Beef Cattle Production is the number one and major source of agricultural income followed by wildlife recreation. Annually, Mason County agricultural commodity sales exceed $30 million.
The development of young people into mature, productive, contributing citizens is a major objective of any society. In a democratic society, it is imperative that young people develop strong qualities of leadership, citizenship and self-esteem so that they will gain the competence and confidence to become active participants of their local community. The Mason County 4-H Program prides itself on developing these qualities in the youth of Mason County. With an annual enrollment of over 200 youth, many of which are 4th generation 4-Hers which focus on livestock production projects and related activities. Numerous state and national participants and winners continue to be produced and developed on an annual basis. |
